The project

We are making a 10-minute stop frame animated retelling of the Greek classic Orpheus and Eurydice with a horror twist! We are horror film makers and are taking our horror film making to the next level. We are also experienced stop motion animators and puppet creators. We are raising £190 for specific puppet making materials.

So, what have we done already? We are not looking for funding to start a project from scratch, and have already heavily invested in this. This film is well into pre-production, and we have created most of our puppets already. We have gone for a quirky look to our puppets and have made them by hand. Our puppets are on a 1:6 scale, and will be animated by using tie-downs and rigging on set. Not only does this include an array of human characters, but it includes creatures such as Cerberus, and the snake that kills Eurydice on her wedding day. You can keep up to date with everything that is happening on our Twitter page,
https://twitter.com/OrpheusAnd

We have created the costumes for all of our puppets. Each costume reflects the individual character’s personality; from the powerful, regal Hades, through to a humble Orpheus.

We have also created some of the key props. We have Orpheus’ guitar and Charon’s boat. In addition to this, we have wedding decorations, food, and flowers for the wedding reception scene. We will be lighting the set mostly by using lights on set to create a more natural feel, in addition to supplementing the lighting with studio lights.  We are also using leftover polyurethane to create grisly artifacts for the wall at the Gates of Hades.

We already have secured the cameras, lighting and software we need to start filming. We will be using Stop Motion Pro for our capturing needs and will be filming at 5K using Canon cameras.

We have also already recorded the music. We were lucky to have musician Andrew Hyldon perform the music for us. As all of it is acoustic guitar based, we incorporated this into the film so that Orpheus plays the guitar rather than the Lyre. Andrew is a talented guitarist and performer, and has provided an emotional soundtrack, which coupled with the picture will bring emotion to the film.

We have also casted the film and have recorded all the dialogue. We have an amazing cast, including:

We also have Dance Artist and Choreographer Natalie Sloth Richter choreographing Eurydice’s dance on her wedding day to music Orpheus composed for her.

Lastly, we have an award-winning production team at the helm, experienced in stop frame animation. This includes Saranne Bensusan who will be directing; with Lawrence Mallinson, Chris Wright, and Charlotte Elizzabeth Langley producing it.

The products we will buy from this fundraising campaign will be specifically used to create the interchangeable faces and heads needed for the six talking puppets, so that the puppets will appear to speak in the film and show the moods and emotions of the story. This part of the storytelling process will require around 10-15 faces per head.

So far, we have used professional materials from Tiranti as an investment into the film, and would like to continue using them to keep consistency and quality. By using professional materials means we can continue to build professional puppets.

What we need is:
RTV (room temperature vulcanised rubber) plus hardener.
Polyurethane Part A and Part B.
Formula 5 spray for separating silicone molds from the puppets.

The RTV is room temperature vulcanising rubber. We have used this to create a mold of a character’s body part – usually heads, hands, feet and torsos. First we sculpt the part we need in clay and let it dry. We then pour the RTV around the body part and let it dry. Once it is set, we take the clay model out. We then mix the polyurethane, and then pour it into the RTV mold and leaving it to set until it hardens. We then have a body part ready to animate. We have already invested in two lots of RTV and one lot of Polyurethane and have made many quality reusable molds, so if something breaks during filming, we can replace it quickly. As we have most of our puppets already, we want to use these materials to create and array of replaceable faces for the puppets so that we can make them appear to speak, and show human emotions.

What is next for the film?

Breaking down dialogue, guitar playing and dancing frame by frame to create dope sheets. This is an instruction sheet of what to do on a frame by frame when animating so that the actions being animated match up to the audio that is recorded.
Making detailed heads and faces for the talking characters.
Then we move into production with filming.

follow url What is the plan for the film once it is finished?

Festivals.  Our plan is to improve on technique and showcase talent at film festivals. We have a good track record of submitting films to festivals and securing festival selections that go onto win awards, and want those who have helped make this film happen to have the opportunity for industry recognition.

For example, our last feature film animation of Lewis Carroll’s ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Marché du Film in 2015, and then went onto get screened at 20 film Festivals. It picked up seven ‘Best Film’ or ‘Best Animation’ awards, in addition to five other award nominations around the world before picking up VOD distribution from a Sales Agent in the USA.

What happens if we raise more than our target?

This will be used to pay for the more expensive film festivals that we otherwise wouldn’t submit to, due to the cost. We will also use any additional funds for marketing and promotion of the cast to generate a stronger interest, which would result in an increased likelihood of getting into a Category A festival.

We will be processing donations through Paypal, in order to offer you buyer protection, and will be updating you on our progress with the film, and publishing our fundraising actions so that you can see how far we have come.
