I am a big fan of old-school special effects, and use these methods in my work – whether it is to create gory scenes or to get a guy talking to himself in the mirror. I really love doing this sort of stuff and am keen to do more! All of my special effects are handled on set so that they can move into post production in a planned way. I always work with the editor so that there are no surprises or clean ups that need doing. I have lots of experience chromakeying, compositing and colour grading, and have also built sets and props for stop frame animation. I am a skilled stop motion animator.

Some chromakeying from my film The Hunting of the Snark. I filmed this in 5K.
More shots from The Hunting of the Snark. On the right is the original full frame image, and on the left is after my chromakeying and colour grading.
This is a series of pictures of me making the boat from scratch for The Hunting of the Snark. I make the decking from scratch and even installed a flight of stairs to the lower deck.
This is the completed boat! The hardest part was the green reflecting in the glass that I had installed into the deck cabin windows.
I did the map artwork and the titles and credits.
This was a simple matte composition, rather than two actors! I chose to not use a green screen to do this because the room was white and there was a lot of light that would have bounced the green around the room. This would have meant a clean up in post prior to the composite. I saw a way to do it without green for a cleaner edit.
Now for something a little different!! I created the special effects and did the set design in Ménage du Trois. Here are some of the stills and BTS pictures of my work. I was recently nominated for Best Special Effects for this film!
I love doing special effects!
